Hobbs Angel Of Death (Aus) - Hobbs Angel Of Death (1988)
Often described as the Mortal Sin of Sydney, without actually sounding anything like Mortal Sin. I love both bands though, well, their first albums anyway. Previously called Tyrus, for some reason they decided (They being Peter Hobbs no doubt) that Tyrus was no good and to name the band after vocalist/guitarist/songwriter/everything guy Peter Hobbs. Anyway, this is a fucking ripper of an album (Jack The Ripper), evil thrash just like it should sound. None of this late 80's bay area happy thrash bullshit.
The guy still tours all over the world, and I really have no idea how he can afford to do that. One year it's the USA, the next it's Europe, and then USA etc. The old man must have some serious cash. One thing he does though is just pick up a backing band wherever he goes, so that must be part of his scheme. For a while the live setlist was amazing, pretty much the whole of this album. Now he has released a new album he likes to play a lot of that. I haven't heard the new album, but all the new songs I have heard live were god awful. I don't know what it is, his guitar and voice sounds just as good live as it does on the album, but only when doing the older tracks. All these new ones just sound bad, real bad. How does one achieve something like that? Regardless, buy his new album and figure it out for yourself, and go and see him live too because the old tracks will not disappoint.
