Mortician (US) - House By The Cemetery 7" (1994)

Mortician (US) - House By The Cemetery 7" (1994)

Due to the death of the original drummer, Matt Sicher, the band went on a break.  They came back with this release three years after Mortal Massacre.  Instead of finding a replacement drummer, a drum machine was brought in.  I don't know if this was only meant to be a temporary thing for this recording or until they found a suitable replacement, but it has become a part of the band and is still used even today, 20 years later.  Later on an album would be made of all classic Mortician songs re-recorded using a real drummer. I wish they would just find a replacement, but perhaps it is just to honour their original drummer.

Besides all of that, this is the beginning of the Mortician we know today.  That is, Samples for all songs, drum machine, impossibly low gurgled vocals.  I'm not particularly a fan of  what came after this, I find that the drum machine is taken to the absolute extreme and is too distracting hilariously over the top.  Its quite obvious that it is a machine and no human could do what is heard, but they aren't claiming to not use a machine and it is well known, so I am not complaining.  Here the drum machine isn't as extreme and although its quite obvious its a drum machine, it is not as overly distracting and works well enough.

Mortician (US) - Mortal Massacre 7" (1991)

Mortician (US) - Mortal Massacre 7" (1991)

This is the debut of longtime member and guitarist Roger Beaujard and with this you can hear the bands style turning to the direction they would later be known for.  Roger's guitar style is very different to that of John McEntee who played on the first 7" and it is apparent from the first time you hear that tone and whammy dive after the Night Of The Living Dead sample.  You also start to see the use of many more samples, one for each song here and usually having something to do with the overall theme of the song.  Mortal Massacre uses the Night Of The Living Dead as its intro sample, as stated before.  Drilling For Brains has its intro taken from Driller Killer and Redrum is obviously from The Shining and uses the sample as an outo.  I think this works really well and gives it an overall darker vibe, especially if you have seen any of these movies.  It invokes the memories of watching these usually dark and gritty b grade VHS horror movies.  This would be the last recording with original drummer Matt Sicher who would never be fully replaced.  All live Mortician gigs use a live guitarist and Roger plays the drums.

Mortician (US) - Brutally Mutilated 7" (1990)

Mortician (US) - Brutally Mutilated 7" (1990)

Brutal doesn't even begin to describe what is contained in this 7".  Back to a time when Mortician still had a real drummer and the guitars were handled by John McEntee of Incantation, we have this.  I believe the demo released before this is the same recording, this just having been mixed a little better to be released on vinyl.  The band's use of a horror movie sample on the outro would later become a staple of the bands sound and style.  But her there is only one sample used, which is from the movie Phantasm, the band the band took its name from.  Later on in their drum machine days you have half an album of samples which are sometimes longer than the songs themselves.  None of that here, which is good and bad, depending on if you enjoy those kind of movies.

Razor (Can) - Malicious Intent (1985)

Razor (Can) - Malicious Intent (1985)

I fucking love this album.  It gets looked over only due to its weird and under produced production.  You'd think that it would be a step up from Evil Invaders, but its actually gone backwards in quality.  Everything sounds thin, but not sharp like on Executioner's Song, its very boomy and cardboard box like.  Despite this flaw, the songs on here are some of my favourites.  The aggression is present, in all instruments and the vocals still have that screeching that Razor is known for.  Embro is even hitting the absolute shit out of the top of the ride cymbal, creating a massive pinging noise, which I happen to love and is also present in bands like Sarcofago and Morbid Saint.  Overall, this is one of my favourite Razor albums after Executioner's Song.  Now, if only this had the same production that album had, it would be truly insane.

Razor (Can) - Evil Invaders (1985)

Razor (Can) - Evil Invaders (1985)

This is a monster of an album, but to me it just doesn't hold a torch to the first album.  Yes, the guitars sound huge and the drums sound so heavy they could crush your dick flat.  But the charm of the first album is the sharp, cutting aggressiveness, not the crushing weight heard here.  Its what I expect from a band called Razor.  Don't get me wrong, I love this album, but that is just one thing I think is lacking here.  Everything else is perfect, especially Sheepdog's vocals which are possibly the best he has ever done.  Most notable are screams in the end of Speed Merchants and Cut Throat.

Razor (Can) - Executioner's Song (1985)

Razor (Can) - Executioner's Song (1985)

This album is one of the fastest, most intense recordings of this style and time.  The hi-hats are going crazy and the guitar sounds like it could cut like a razor, which is fitting seeing as the band is named Razor.  The sharp, thin, but not weakly thin guitar is what really makes this as intense as it is.  The vocals are another factor which makes this stand out.  Sheepdog's voice right throughout the album sound akin to tyres screeching, some of the most insane screams ever heard are contained in this album.  Definitely top tier of all things to come from Canada.

Possessed (US) - Seven Churches (1985)

Well, if you don't already know this one then all hope is lost.  This is one of those perfect albums that I can't really find any fault with.  They would start to go downhill after this was released.  The others were nowhere near as rough sounding.  That is what made this so good!

Sacrifice (Can) - Torment In Fire (1985)

Sacrifice (Can) - Torment In Fire (1985)

Canada's answer to Slayer, and to be honest, to me I much prefer this album to anything Slayer ever released.  That will probably upset a whole bunch of people but I don't care, I never saw the appeal in Slayer, its just another band to me.  Ferocious is an understatement when describing this album.  The guitars rip everything to pieces with plenty of fast riffing and chaotic whammy bar action.  Drums sound like cannons and lots of floor tom use, most notable in Homicidal Breath.  The vocals are the best thing for me.  They sound so frantic, it reminds me of Sadus.  This is just one of many bands that establishes Canada as being just as good as anywhere else in the world, spawning so many top level bands.  Might I also add that as you can see on the back of the cover, BC Rich guitars and basses are being used.  That is a sure way to know something will sound good.
