From what I understand, there are two versions of this.  The first version (this one I have here) is the first mix that got a release on Mausoleum Records in 1984.  In 1985 it was released by Earthshaker Records and I guess something wasn't right with it, either pressing problems, the band, label or someone didn't like it or it was the wrong mix that got sent out, whatever it was, it got remixed and released later on with a big note on the cover stating "NEW REMIX".  I can't tell you what that second version sounds like as I have never heard it, and I also don't know what version was used on CD releases either.  I have no idea which is the more common version, but here is the first one on Mausoleum anyway.  Proper German Speed Metal with the "love them or hate them" vocals of Thorsten Bergmann.

This was my introduction to Destruction, and as much as people I know don't like it as much as the previous two albums and the first EP, I still fucking love it.  Before there were things like Metal Archives and YouTube, all I had for band reccomendations was some of those early HTML fan websites to go off and the thanks lists on albums I had found.  I would always write down a list of the bands I'd read being thanked and I don't remember where it was but Sodom was one of those bands.  I ended up finding a guy selling some Sodom records, Mortal Way Of Live and Better Off Dead.  The best thing about the Mortal Way Of Live record was the inserts had a list and photos of all the Steamhammer back catalogue, the same as what Noise Records used to print up, which was another haven for discovering new bands.  It was here I saw discovered bands like Hobbs Angel Of Death, Satan, Assasin, and Laaz Rockit.  But in amongst all these bands is where I found Release From Agony and Sentence Of Death and it was the artwork for those two, but mainly Release From Agony that sold it for me alone.

This is probably the only reason I rate it over Infernal Overkill.  It is a definite improvement over one of my biggest disappointments in life, Mad Butcher.  I still rate Release From Agony as one of my all time favourite Destruction tracks.

Very much a disappointing EP.  After what is possibly one of the greatest Thrash EPs ever recorded and two equally as god tier albums, this really doesn't do anything for me.  An updated, boring version of Mad Butcher with all of the evil drained from it's ugly tits.  Not even a band like Destruction is impervious to shit.  At least, of all the worthwhile stuff they did (everything up until 1989) only 1 is shitty, and at least it's only a 4 song EP.  That, I can live with.

My favourite Destruction album and the perfect Thrash production sound for me.  It also happens to be another reason all these remastered/remixed CDs and uploads on YouTube piss me off and made me want to start putting up the originals in all their glory.  My main problem I had with this was when I purchased a CD version of this album and straight away, listening to the first track Curse The Gods I knew there was something wrong.  They had cut out the end of that guitar intro and skipped the count in, going straight to the first riff in what I find is a really jarring sounding editing decision and doesn't work.  Maybe it is because I heard the other version first, but anyone who hasn't heard it can surely hear there is something wrong there.  This would be the last of the original albums to feature the band as a 3 piece, with the god awful Mad Butcher EP being somewhat of an introductory recording to try out a second guitarist.

Cue trigger warning for soft cunts, because here comes another controversial opinion.  Lets forget about the Mad Butcher EP existing all together, because it just really shouldn't.  But of the first four recordings, Sentence Of Death, Infernal Overkill, Eternal Devastation and Release From Agony, this is my least favourite.  Quite a step up from Sentence Of Death in regards to the complexity of the riffs, but the ferocity is still there.  I think the guitar tone and overall production is what does it for me, for this sort of thing there is just a certain type of sound that really works.  One cannot deny the masterpiece that is the track Bestial Invasion though.

If there ever was a record that influenced my earliest teen years then it was this.  The music, the cover art, my love of the EP format, just all of it.  How many bullet belts were sold after this was released? I know after just looking at this I went and got one straight away.  Definitely a big influence on me and another favourite band of mine, Sarcofago, that's for sure.  It's a shame that they re-recorded Mad Butcher later on and made it so boring.  This is raw and evil, the only way it should sound.  Not quite as sewer sounding as what Sodom was doing, just a bit of a step up from that.  These guys could play and they definitely didn't over play.

If that cover art just wasn't enough for you, there was a variation used on the US release by Metal Blade.  Every photo shoot needs a fake plastic skeleton.

More of the same as what you hear on the previous EP.  More of the same amazing artwork too, more of the same everything.  How can a Death Metal band that has a song about Tolkien be anything but good?  Everything here is great, a little bit louder, better production that does it true justice.  If you liked Resurrection Absurd then you'll definitely like this.  Hard for me to choose which one I prefer, I always listen to one after the other since they are only short EPs
