This is exactly the album I was talking about in the previous post about Leather Angel.  Whilst not their first recording, that honour going to a 12" the year before in 1982, this is the first of two albums released in the same year, 1983.  Girlschool had come and gone by now, at least for me.  Their first 4 are what really matters the most, and the fourth, Play Dirty was well and truly taken a step in the more commercial direction.  Luckily, Rock Goddess, even though having been around almost as long as Girlschool, picked up where they left off and released two hard as nails NWOBHM albums. Maybe it is just me fanboying over this shit, but I don't think there is a single weak track on this whole album, but then again maybe it is due to me overplaying this in my teens.  This album also spawned a single with the track My Angel.

This was something I stumbled upon in my quest all those years ago to find all female/female fronted metal bands.  The few people I do hear mentioning this always call the band Oral Sex.  No you fucking idiot, the EP is Oral Sex and the band is called Oral, is that so difficult to comprehend?  Very suggestive lyrics from an all girl metal band, what is there not to love?  Although nothing in the credits suggests it to be true, I have been informed by very reliable sources that Lemmy had something to do with this band.  Producing, managing, recording or whatever it may be, I just don't know, but it was something.  So I am told.

Black Leather, apart from being a really fucking good track, is also apparently a Sex Pistols song?  Or at least it is credited to Cook/Jones anyway, so I am assuming as much.

For me, this is quite a let down when compared to the previous album.  Yes, it is a really good album, but did they really think anyone wasn't going to notice they were just trying to be Slayer here?  Not that it's usually a problem for most people, but for me, not being much of a fan of Slayer to begin with doesn't help.  I don't really feel like saying anything else anymore, thanks Slayer.

Some of the finest Thrash to ever come out of the UK, that part of the world that pretty much birthed Heavy Metal, and then had a whole new movement in the late 70's, early 80's, yet failed to produce more than a handful of Thrash bands, and even less that were any good.  Luckily they got back on track with their Death Metal later on.  Considering they started out as a punk band, its no wonder they ride the fine line between Thrash and Punk.  Even songs like Death Metal sound more Punk than Thrash at times.  This is certainly the best album they did and dare I say the best UK Thrash album too.

Another Vinyl Solution release, this time from the mighty Cancer out of the UK.  They sure did make up for their more than woeful Thrash scene with Death Metal the likes of Bolt Thrower, Benediction, Carcass, Napalm Death and Cancer.  In typical Death Metal style at the time, this was recorded over in Florida by none other than Scott Burns at Morrisound Studios.  Because what band of the time didn't?  This new album also brings in a new, second guitarist, and lo and behold who would that be? James Murphy of course, because what band of the time didn't?  Gone are the Thrash elements of the previous album and now all that is left is full blown Death Metal.  Highly recommended, as with the first album.

At times, the singles Venom released were exponentially better than any of the songs on their albums. This is definitely one single to prove that too.  The B/side is pretty impressive too.  I had already heard plenty of Venom on and off from time to time, but it was upon hearing Acid Queen where Venom just all of a sudden clicked with me, you don't even need to any riffs to play this, you just need a whammy dive and that will do.

The 12" version came with another legendary track as an extra, Bursting Out.  I've got both rips up here with no difference in the sound, just the extra track.

Death Metal really picked up and exploded around 1990.  This is one of those albums released a year before.  Yes, Death had already released a few albums and were already boring as fuck by then and plenty of bands had demos, but there were nowhere near as many full Death Metal LPs in 1989 as there was in 1990.  You had Obituary, Morbid Angel, Atheist, Autopsy, Morgoth, and Pestillence, just to name a few of the bigger names.  You also had this album, Cancer.  I find a lot of the bands who released a Death Metal album in 1989 had a lot darker, primitive feel about them.  This is a good thing.  To The Gory End is no exception and straight away you can see just from the cover artwork this is apparent.  I mean come on, if you hadn't already noticed, this artwork is taken straight from George A. Romero's 1978 film Dawn Of The Dead.  Perfect for a Death Metal album with a title like To The Gory End.  I wont even start to get into how good these songs are otherwise I will be here all night.  Just fucking worship this album.

If you were to ask me what my favourite band of the NWOBHM was that wasn't Venom, it would be a very hard choice.  But more than likely I'd end up just saying Diamond Head.  Especially that first album, holy shit.  One thing it is missing is the track Shoot Out The Lights.  I have no idea why it was not included, time on the LP I guess, but shit.  That main riff is one hell of a riff and everything that makes their first album so good is present here.  It even has a different recording of Helpless, which I don't think sounds as powerful as it would on the album but that doesn't stop it from being fucking HELPLESS.  If you don't know it by now just go home.
