What an absolutely disappointing album.  After hearing Campo De Extermínio for the first time I was blown away that something could sound like that.  I quickly made it my fucking business to own that album and it was the first LP from Brazil I ever bought.  After a while I decided to hear something else by these maniacs.  So here I am, worshipping Campo De Extermínio then I hear Blocked Minds and then Negatives.  What the fuck is this bullshit?  This isn't even bullshit, this is horse shit.  Vanilla thrash whos only redeeming factor is that sometimes it sounds a bit like later Voivod, which is not the best thing to have going for you, as well as being on Cogumelo records.  So me being a completionist I have to have this waste of paper and plastic in my collection.

Utterly disgusted.

Get fucked.

Please.  Do not disappoint me when I get to see you play all of Campo De Extermínio in Berlin this coming November.  Don't do a Negatives on me.

Besides some bands I may have never even heard from Brazil before (not so likely I am sure), this was one of the last ones I ever discovered.  I don't know when or where, but it ended up taking me quite a few years to actually find a copy of this.  First time I laid my eyes on that cover all I could think of was what the fuck is that thing, and what is it doing?  Whatever it was, I knew I had to hear this because it looked incredibly bad and gave me a very lo-fi vibe, the same kind of feeling I had when I first saw the Exterminator LP.  When I finally got a chance to hear it I was surprised.  Yes, it was bad, but it was not as bad as I expected and was definitely no Exterminator.

Being released in 1983 meant it was really early on in Brazil for metal with only Hard Rock from the 70's like Som Imaginário and Rock Da Mortalha and Stress releasing their first album a year before in 1982 being the only fully metallic sounding band of the time.  Infact, it was so early that the band sounds just like it could have come out of the NWOBHM.  Easily fitting that time frame, it's easy to think this is perhaps just another band from the UK, after all, it sounds just like Holocaust, especially the vocals.  The production is rough as all get fucked, but that is to be expected from so early on in a country like Brazil.  The first Stress album a year earlier is a bit more polished than this is to give you an idea.

What I really love about this album though, is that all lyrics are sung in English.  "English".  As I may have written times before, I love broken English.  I am not sure what it is about it, but it has a very strange feel to it and this album does not disappoint.  Apparently the vocalist/guitarist/main songwriter Helmut Leschonsky was living in the USA for a short period at the end of the 70's and beginning of the 80's before returning to Brazil to form Karisma. This no doubt may have had an influence to sing in English as many other bands at the time were still using Portuguese in Brazil.

It's a hard decision which to pick as to what I'd say my favourite Harppia release is.  My favourite track is definitely Salém (A Cidade Das Bruxas) on the 1985 EP A Ferro E Fogo, but I think this album wins overall.  As you may have guessed, being from Brazil and all, this band sings only in Portuguese, which is why it is sometimes titled Sete (Seven in Português).  As soon as you put this record on and Na Calada Da Noite starts, you know they were fans of Iron Maiden.  Not so much to vocals, but very much so in way the guitar is played.

I started out on the more extreme stuff out of Brazil when I was a lot younger and as I got older I discovered there were actually a lot of the more traditional heavy metal style bands coming out of the country.  This was one of the first bands I stumbled upon like that along with Azul Limão and as I mentioned before, the artwork really pulled me in to wanting to hear and own this record.

When it comes to heavy metal albums from Brazil, Azul Limão works it's way into my top 4 along with Karisma, Harppia and Alta Tensão.  The band's name translates in English to Blue Lemon, which is Brazilian slang for LSD.  So from the get go, with a name in Portuguese you can probably guess that the lyrics are all in Portuguese too, makes sense.  Production on this album is great, it's not too lo-fi but not so polished, it has quite the edge to it.  Drums and bass are all there, loud and clear and the guitar really cuts through.  A lot of the tracks on this album such as Portas Da Imaginação and Satã Clama Metal are quite fast for this style of metal, but then it gets evened out with a few slow ones too like Sangue Frio and O Grito.

The overall feel of albums like these from Brazil is a strange feeling for me.  I really love the artwork on this album.  I don't know what it is even meant to be of but it sure works for me, it's what made me want to listen to this album.  First time I saw it I just knew I had to have it, I didn't care if it was shit or not.  Lucky for me the music was good too.

Such a heavy band and very ahead of their time, and the most amazing thing of it all, it came from Chile of all places.  This LP is actually a compilation of their two demos from 1987, plus two live tracks.  There was also a 7" released in 1987 which only had two of the three tracks from the first demo, so it is nice to actually have them all in one place.  Would have really prefered the two live tracks to be at the very end instead of at the end of each side, but it works I guess.

This would sadly be the band's last output before they were fucked around and screwed over by Roadrunner Records.  Originally released as a demo in 1987, it finally got a proper LP release in 1993, albeit possibly too late.  1993 is somewhat of a cut off year for me when it comes to Death Metal, everything after is rarely any good and this sort of missed the boat.  These guys came from being somewhat sub-par Hellhammer/Venom clones into something way ahead of their time.

I absolutely love this demo, there is so much about it that makes my doodle pointy.  The first is that you have a bunch of tracks from their previous demo, and whilst not exactly a huge step forward in their ability like it was from Sons Of Evil to Bestial Death, the production is a little bit clearer ("clearer") here.  Not clinically sterile, but it does it justice for something like this.  Wake The Dead with it's intro is just fucking amazing.

Second is that you get two early versions of songs that would appear on Into The Abyss, Yog Sothoth and Alive (Undead).  What more could you want than that?

And lastly, the best for me, even though it could have been included in the first reason is the inclusion of Legions Of Hell.  As if it wasn't good enough already on Sons Of Evil, here we have a longer, updated version of this fucking track.  Now that''s something more that you fucking get.  Fuck yes.

This is another of the Poison demos released recently on LP.  This one was released alongside the next one, Awakening Of The Dead.  Same thing happened with the Die Hard editions as with Sons Of Evil, but at least the normal LP pressings had good artwork.  I am not sure when or where it came from, but prior to these official pressings there was a bootleg pressing which also came with two extra songs.  The quality on the official LP is better than the bootleg, but in saying that it's hardly much of a difference.

The overall production quality on this recording is not all that great, but it is a big step further compared to Sons Of Evil.  The ability of the band has gotten better overall, songs are a bit tighter despite still being loose as fuck.  Songwriting is better too, with 6 tracks including an intro and two much longer songs, whereas Sons Of Evil had a total of 13 tracks.  All but the intro and the track Witchfynde would go on to be recorded again for the next demo and Witchfynde would appear once more on the Live Terror demo.  These longer, more complex songs would be a taste of what was to come from this band, constantly improving but sadly going nowhere in the end.
